Biography

Fady Alajaji received the B.E. degree with distinction from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1990 and 1994, respectively. He also held a postdoctoral appointment in 1994 at the Institute for Systems Research, University of Maryland. In 1995, he joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, where he is currently Professor of Mathematics and Engineering. Since 1997, he has also held a cross-appointment with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Queen's University. He served as Acting Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics during 2013–2014. He also served as Chair of the Queen's Mathematics and Engineering Program from 2003 to 2008 and again during 2018–2019. His research interests include information theory, joint source-channel coding, error-control coding, data compression, digital communications, and machine learning.

Dr. Alajaji served as Associate Editor for Shannon Theory and Information Measures for the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory from 2019 to 2022. Earlier, he served as Area Editor for Source-Channel Coding and Signal Processing (2008–2015) and Editor for Source and Source/Channel Coding (2003–2012) for the IEEE Transactions on Communications. He has served as organizer and Technical Program Committee member for numerous international conferences and workshops in information theory and communications. His awards include the Premier's Research Excellence Award from the Province of Ontario (2001) for research on the theory and practice of joint source-channel coding in telecommunication systems, the Engineering Society of Queen's University Golden Apple Teaching Award (2015 and 2024), and the Leadership in Teaching Award from the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Queen's University (2022).
